A Brief History
In medieval times, the Catholic Church sold indulgences - essentially tickets that promised reduced time in purgatory or even guaranteed passage to heaven. For the right price, your sins could be forgiven.
This practice became so widespread and controversial that it sparked the Protestant Reformation in 1517, when Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to a church door in protest.
